Laparoscopic Quantitative 3D Endoscopy for Image Guided Surgery
نویسندگان
چکیده
Image-guided surgery aims at relating data of an on-going intervention to preoperative information about important anatomical structures or tumor localizations. Using intra-operatively acquired 3D information of the operation area has been proven to be the right starting point for accomplishing this task, but is leading to technical challenges especially in the field of minimally invasive surgery. A novel laparoscopic 3D surface scan device providing >3000 3D surface points at 20 fps was utilized to exemplarily accomplish a) the fusion of 3D surface scans and color information at 20 fps and b) the fusion of 3D surface scans and CT data with a mean error of 1.68mm. Experiments were on one hand accomplished in-vitro using a porcine stomach and on the other hand using a liver phantom. The results verify the proof of concept of the utilized system and lead to clear directions for future research.

A review of 3D/2D registration methods for image-guided interventions
Registration of pre- and intra-interventional data is one of the key technologies for image-guided radiation therapy, radiosurgery, minimally invasive surgery, endoscopy, and interventional radiology. In this paper, we survey those 3D/2D data registration methods that utilize 3D computer tomography or magnetic resonance images as the pre-interventional data and 2D X-ray projection images as the...
متن کاملThe Evolution of the Conventional Endoscope in an Era of 3-Dimensional Technology
(3D) displays, these are beginning to make a mark in the market for medical devices. This pilot study by Hyun et al.1 suggests that obtaining quantitative 3D information will be feasible with conventional gastrointestinal endoscopes. In practice, quantitative assessment is impossible since the conventional endoscope provides image but not quantitative data. The authors, however, attempted to ca...
متن کاملFeasibility of Obtaining Quantitative 3-Dimensional Information Using Conventional Endoscope: A Pilot Study
BACKGROUND/AIMS Three-dimensional (3D) imaging is gaining popularity and has been partly adopted in laparoscopic surgery or robotic surgery but has not been applied to gastrointestinal endoscopy. As a first step, we conducted an experiment to evaluate whether images obtained by conventional gastrointestinal endoscopy could be used to acquire quantitative 3D information. METHODS Two endoscopes...
متن کاملThree-dimensional imaging system for colonoscopy.
Three-dimensional (3D) imaging techniques have been developed in the medical field. In laparoscopic surgery, such techniques are widely used; they provide the surgeon with spatial information and increase the safety of surgical techniques [1–3]. In gastrointestinal endoscopy, Sakata et al. reported the efficacy of 3D imaging for improved detection of colonic lesions using simulated 3D colonosco...
متن کاملA Smoke Removal Method for Laparoscopic Images
In laparoscopic surgery, image quality can be severely degraded by surgical smoke, which not only introduces error for the image processing (used in image guided surgery), but also reduces the visibility of the surgeons. In this paper, we propose to enhance the laparoscopic images by decomposing them into unwanted smoke part and enhanced part using a variational approach. The proposed method re...
